Inspired by my love of printmaking, hiking and folk traditions around the globe.
Stoneware slipcast, from my own original mold. Individually carved and painted with colored slip. The little "grotto" window can hold a small treasure- use museum putty to secure something special.
Home altar traditions can be found in several cultures; including Mexican, Buddhist & Hindu. The altars were generally made and maintained by women. It was a direct way for women to assert their power and spirituality in a patriarchal society, within the home and family. They are a physical manifestation of personal faith. A link between the physical and the spiritual. The altars that I am making are a celebration of nature, women and a call to strength. Documenting my own journey- and where I find joy, pain, love & growth. They are an exploration of coded communication- much like you can read a map- they are meant to convey place, direction and intention. The patterns, shapes, marks and cheap symbols carry a meaning. Some obscure and quiet. Others open and obvious. The randomness of nature and the patterns of human interaction.
Hangs on the wall with a simple nail. Lightweight.
