Vintage British Aesthetic Period Jug with Bird and Bamboo Design


Aestheticism describes a late 19th century European arts movement which centred on the doctrine that art exists for the sake of its beauty alone. It was a reaction against the industrial age when the functionality of objects was emphasised. Aswell as influencing design its principles were included in writing such as the works of Oscar Wilde.

This lovely little jug depicts bamboo and birds and is painted lilac tot he interior, all very typical of this movement.

Bearing in mind its age, unsurprisingly cheap this little jug has a few chips (please see photos) but they are so minimal as to not detract from its overall beauty.
